We offer a range of creative writing workshops and residentials in two distinct community locations in East London and Suffolk. We believe that writing is an aid to well-being and makes a real contribution to peoples’ lives and the communities they live in.
What is a Mendham Writers residential course?
Mendham Writers is about providing a peaceful supportive writing retreat. Our 2 night weekend residential writing courses give people space and time to write, supported by expert tuition from professional writers. We are keen to work with beginner writers encouraging them to start getting their ideas onto the page and support those with work-in-progress – providing new perspectives, inspiration and encouragement.
Each course provides individual support over the weekend. The course is tutored by one professional writer. A guest author is invited on the Saturday. The course administrator is in attendance throughout your stay.
Mendham Writers weekend residential writing courses run from Friday 6pm to Sunday 1pm. After dinner on Friday evening we begin with a short writing activity as a focus for a new piece of writing. On Saturday there are tutor led workshops in the morning exploring specific aspects of writing for the genre. In the afternoon there are one-to-one sessions with our tutor looking at your own writing in greater depth. On Saturday evening, after dinner, our tutor reads from their own work and discusses their own work-in-progress. On the Sunday morning we have a group session followed by a workshop session which includes reading and discussion of work-in-progress.
To get the most out of the weekend, you will be encouraged to share your writing with the rest of the group in evening readings and to offer and receive feedback with your fellow students.
Accommodation and Food
The weekends are held in the beautiful villlage of Mendham, Suffolk. Our location is Mendham Mill.
The accommodation is luxury and each learner has their own double bedroom and, of course, participants can choose to share rooms. The Miller’s House has 3 bath/shower rooms.
Courses do not rely on the use of a computer but you are welcome to bring your own laptop.
Throughout your course all your food and drink is provided. The Course Administrator is your host. So as not to distract you from your writing weekend we have a cook, Bronwen, who prepares the Friday evening supper, Saturday lunch and evening meal. We source fresh, local, seasonal produce and will cater for vegetarians. The atmosphere is intended to be relaxed, friendly and informal.
We can tailor courses for specific groups and are keen to encourage people who wouldn’t normally consider writing to be a part of their lives. Set up as informal and exploratory writing sessions these workshops would be part of an individual journey discovering how writing can unleash long-forgotten desires, dreams and hope.
